COLLEGE FOOTBALL-HEISMAN TROPHY
Newton's law: Runaway Heisman winner...All-American snub
NEW YORK (AP) — Cam Newton won the Heisman Trophy — as if there was any doubt.
Whether he gets to keep it is still to be determined.
Auburn's hulking quarterback brushed off an NCAA investigation of his recruitment as he did so many tacklers this season and captured college football's most prestigious individual award in a landslide. The Auburn junior called it a "dream come true for me...I'm living testimony that anything is possible."
Newton is the third player from Auburn to win the Heisman, joining Bo Jackson in 1985 and Pat Sullivan in 1971. He received 729 first-place votes and outpointed runner-up Andrew Luck of Stanford by 1,184 points. Luck received 78 first-place votes.
Oregon running back LaMichael James was third, followed by Boise State quarterback Kellen Moore, the other finalist.
Newton tossed 28 TDs while passing for 2,589 yards this season. He also ran the ball for 1,409 yards and 21 touchdowns while leading the Tigers into the BCS Championship game against Oregon.
NEW YORK (AP) — Cam Newton, just the third player in big time college football history to run for at least 20 touchdowns and throw at least 20 TD passes, was not named to the Football Writers Association of America's All-America team released just hours ahead of the Heisman ceremony. The writers went with Boise State's Kellen Moore.
The NCAA ruled that Newton's father tried to engineer a play-for-pay scheme that would have sent his son to Mississippi State. The NCAA also said there was no evidence Newton or Auburn knew about his father's dealings, so the star junior was not punished. But the NCAA also indicated the investigation was not finished.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL/FLORIDA
Texas defensive coordinator takes Florida job
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas defensive coordinator Will Muschamp (MUHS'-champ) has accepted an offer to be the head coach at Florida.
Muschamp just finished his third season at Texas where he was the head-coach-in-waiting to succeed Mack Brown. Instead, he replaces Urban Meyer at Florida. Meyer unexpectedly resigned this week, saying he wants to spend more time with his family.
Muschamp was one of top-earning assistants in the country with a $900,000 annual salary. He calls his new gig "a dream come true."
Muschamp's previous stints as an assistant coach include LSU and Auburn and the Miami Dolphins in the NFL.
A news conference is scheduled for Tuesday.

Giants-Vikes postponed until Monday night...Cassel out
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A snowstorm has pushed the New York Giants-Minnesota Vikings game to Monday night.
NFL spokesman Greg Aiello (eye-EHL'-oh) confirmed the decision to postpone the game after the Giants got stuck in Kansas City because of the weather in Minnesota that brought 15 or more inches of snow. The game will start at 8 p.m. Eastern time Monday and will be televised only in the Minnesota and New York markets.
The delay gives Vikings quarterback Brett Favre (fahrv) another day to heal. Favre is aiming to make his NFL-record 298th straight start, with a sprained shoulder that has made throwing difficult. He's listed as questionable to play the Giants.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Quarterback Matt Cassel didn't travel to San Diego and is out for the Chiefs' game against the Chargers.
Cassel, having the finest year of his career for the AFC West-leading Chiefs (8-4), underwent an emergency appendectomy Wednesday morning.
